Dear Members,

Varanasi Clinical Hematology Society (VCHS) was established with the mission to promote excellence in patient care, research, and education in the field of clinical hematology. VCHS acts exclusively in the area of clinical hematology and works for the advancement of hematological sciences and its practitioners. The society promotes and supports research in the clinical, molecular, and genetic aspects of blood and its disorders. We are also actively involved in the development of basic and molecular hematology laboratory services in and around Varanasi.

VCHS encourages academic activities such as the annual conference and regular CMEs that bring together hematologists and clinicians from across India and beyond. To recognize and encourage excellence, the society organizes awards for the best research papers, best published articles in national and international journals, and prestigious orations during its annual meetings. VCHS also aims to build strong collaborations with national and international hematology societies to provide young hematologists with a global platform to exchange ideas and broaden their scientific understanding. The society works alongside government and institutional bodies to help formulate guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis, and management of hematological disorders.

Clinical hematology continues to be a fascinating and evolving specialty. However, our passion for the subject must ultimately translate into tangible benefits for our patients and society. This can happen only when we focus on solving diagnostic and management challenges in a cost-effective and patient-centered manner. Many of us from the earlier generation of hematologists were deeply rooted in internal medicine, which helped us build strong diagnostic skills—a foundation that remains crucial even today. My own association with hematology began under the mentorship of dedicated clinicians who practiced both internal medicine and hematology, a model that allowed us to preserve and strengthen our clinical judgment and holistic understanding of disease.

For students and young doctors seeking both professional fulfillment and opportunities for social contribution, family medicine offers immense satisfaction—and can coexist with hematology practice as well. The absence of a strong family medicine network has created a gap between people and hospitals, leading to misunderstanding, mistrust, and even hostility. Rebuilding that bridge is essential for the health of both our profession and our society.

Finally, as medical professionals, we must remain vigilant against unscientific practices being promoted under the guise of tradition or cultural sentiment. True scientific progress and compassionate patient care can only be achieved through evidence-based medicine, ethical practice, and strong foundational training in clinical medicine.

Let us continue working together under the banner of VCHS to advance the science and practice of hematology for the betterment of patients, the medical community, and society at large.
